We've produced packaging for 100+ Western DTC brands. The same five mistakes come up again and again — and most of them are avoidable before you spend a dollar.
1. Designing first, checking print second
The #1 cause of delays. A designer builds a beautiful file, then the factory rejects it for wrong bleed, missing dieline, or low resolution. Fixing it costs a full revision round.
Work with a team that designs and prints. The file is print-checked before you ever see it.
2. Chasing the lowest unit price
The cheapest quote usually hides the most: thinner board, off-color match, or a "setup fee" that appears at proof stage. A $0.30 box that arrives unusable is more expensive than a $0.45 box that works.
3. Ignoring MOQ until launch
Many factories quote low MOQs to win the inquiry, then push you to 5,000+ at proof time. Confirm the real MOQ for your format in writing before paying a deposit.
4. No pre-production sample
Skipping the sample to save a week is how brands end up with 3,000 wrong boxes. A deductible sample is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
5. Treating design and production as separate vendors
This is the big one. When the designer and the factory don't talk, you become the translator — and the blame lands on you when something's off. One team, one quote, one accountable partner.
The shortcut
Pick a partner who designs and manufactures. Files are print-ready by default, MOQ is real, samples are deductible, and there's one throat to choke. That's the whole point of what we do.
